Traditional Thai
Bamboo Tattoo by Chay
Rawai, Phuket

Needles (the same type used with a machine) are firmly attached to the end of a thin piece of bamboo (similar size to a chopstick) using cotton or twine. The amount of needles used in the process varies according to tattoo type and size. The needles are put in a line instead of a round bullet so that a very fine line can be achieved. This is then gently tapped into the skin.
With bamboo tattooing, the skin is punctured but not torn, which results in a significant reduction in pain and bleeding. Consequently there is no scabbing as with most machine tattoos, just a light peeling during the healing process. This quicker, simpler healing process with bamboo means there is less chance of infection. Treatment with olive oil ensures a totally natural healing process with no requirements of keeping the tattoo covered in cling film, for example.
Bamboo tattoos tend to maintain their colour extremely well, staying bright and strong. You can expose your tattoo afterwards without chance of infection. Obviously you must keep it clean, but this is the only MUST after a bamboo tattoo. You can swim, sunbathe and carry on without any restrictions on your daily routine.
